Abduction During Evening Return
In a shocking incident, Berhampur-based land trader Sudhir Patra was allegedly kidnapped on the evening of the 15th of this month while returning home after playing volleyball. Soon after the abduction, the kidnappers contacted his wife and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore for his release.
Disturbing Videos Sent to Family
The accused reportedly sent disturbing videos to Patra’s wife, showing him being beaten, with a gun pointed at his head. The videos also included blank firing to create fear. The kidnappers instructed the family to bring money to a specific location.
Ransom Attempt Fails Amid Police Tracking
Patra’s wife reportedly reached Aska carrying cash and gold as instructed. However, the kidnappers did not appear, as they allegedly came to know that the police were tracking her movements. After this, all communication from the kidnappers stopped.
Murder Suspected Over Property Dispute
The case has taken a new turn, with suspicion that the kidnapping and murder were linked to a property dispute. It is reported that Patra had ongoing conflicts with his nephew and niece over the division of family property.
Body Recovered from Forest Area
On Wednesday, a dead body was recovered from the Sorada forest area, which was later identified as Sudhir Patra. This confirmed fears that he had been killed.
Police Intensify Investigation
Berhampur police have formed seven teams to investigate the case. Around 8 to 10 people, including the nephew and niece, have been detained and are being questioned. Police are also checking phone call records to find links and evidence.
Previous Disputes Under Scanner
Sudhir Patra and his brother were both involved in the land business. After the brother’s death a few months ago, disputes between the two families reportedly increased over land matters. Investigators suspect that contract killers may have been involved.
