Historic First for Temple Security in Odisha

In a landmark move, Puri Police deployed an Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) outside the revered Shree Jagannath Temple during Debasnana Purnima, marking a significant shift in temple security protocols. Local residents and devotees called the deployment “historic,” as the centuries-old ritual drew tens of thousands of pilgrims, just weeks ahead of the annual Rath Yatra.

Commandos and High-Tech Vigilance at the Temple Gates

The security cover included elite commandos from the Odisha Police’s tactical unit, experienced in urban combat and rapid threat response. They were stationed visibly at the main entrance to the temple, while a massive police contingent of 70 platoons, supported by three deputy commandants and 450 senior officers, was deployed across the city to manage crowd flow and maintain order.

Temple Declared Category-A Risk Zone Amid Threat Alerts

According to officials, intelligence briefings prior to the festival had identified vague yet persistent threats targeting major religious events like the Rath Yatra. As a result, the temple was classified as a Category-A high-risk zone, prompting a comprehensive security overhaul.

Layered Security with Bulletproof Vehicles and AI Surveillance

Security arrangements were both visible and strategic. A bulletproof vehicle nicknamed ‘Rakshak’ stood by the temple stairway, ready for emergencies. Meanwhile, tamper-proof CCTV cameras equipped with AI-powered monitoring software streamed live footage to control rooms, ensuring real-time threat detection. Even Puri’s coastline was secured, with naval patrol boats scanning the waters for any suspicious activity.

Top Dignitaries Expected; Vigilance at an All-Time High

Puri Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal confirmed to the Times of India that the ATS deployment is aimed at fortifying temple security during both Debasnana Purnima and Rath Yatra. With invitations extended to the President, Prime Minister, and multiple Chief Ministers, the administration anticipates even tighter layers of vigilance in the coming weeks.

Public Support and Crowd Management Challenges

Though officials stopped short of citing any specific terror threats, the deployment underscores a shift toward preventive policing at one of India’s busiest religious sites. Since the ₹800-crore ABADHA redevelopment, daily visitor numbers have surged, with officials estimating over 50,000 devotees on peak days.

Public reaction on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has largely been supportive, praising the move for ensuring safety. However, some users raised concerns about the logistics of managing such dense crowds during high-alert events.
