The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department Odisha has clarified that 5 kg LPG cylinders can be sold to specific groups, including labourers and students, amid concerns over gas supply and restrictions in the state.

5 Kg Cylinders Allowed with ID and e-KYC

The department stated that labourers and students can purchase 5 kg LPG cylinders by showing valid identity proof, provided their e-KYC is completed. These cylinders will be supplied through authorized oil marketing companies.

This clarification comes after confusion regarding restrictions on the sale of small cylinders in the open market.

Restrictions on Open Market Sales

Earlier, the state government had imposed restrictions on the sale of LPG cylinders in the open market due to concerns over supply disruptions triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Authorities had announced that only registered consumers would be able to purchase LPG cylinders directly from gas agencies, aiming to prevent misuse and ensure fair distribution.

Minister Addresses Supply Concerns

The state’s Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister had assured that there is no shortage of LPG or petrol in Odisha. He emphasized that steps have been taken to curb black marketing and ensure that genuine consumers receive uninterrupted supply.

Crackdown on Black Marketing Intensifies

To prevent illegal sale and hoarding, enforcement teams have intensified raids across multiple districts.

In Jajpur, officials seized 103 LPG cylinders along with two commercial cylinders. In Dhenkanal, 27 cylinders were confiscated from a shop involved in illegal activities.

Similarly, joint enforcement teams conducted raids in Puri near Batamangala, recovering 87 cylinders, while in Baliapal of Balasore, 14 LPG cylinders were seized.

Focus on Fair Distribution and Transparency

Officials reiterated that strict monitoring and enforcement measures are being implemented to ensure transparency in LPG distribution. The move aims to curb black marketing while ensuring that essential fuel reaches eligible consumers without disruption.
