Onion prices have witnessed a sharp rise across Odisha, adding to the growing burden on consumers. Retail prices have climbed to around Rs 50–60 per kg, with the price increasing by nearly Rs 30 per kg within a week.
Last week, onions were being sold at around Rs 25–30 per kg. However, prices have now jumped to Rs 50–60 per kg in the retail market. Traders are reportedly charging different prices at different locations, leaving consumers to bear the brunt of the sudden increase.
Odisha largely depends on supplies from states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra’s Nashik region to meet its onion demand. Reports of crop damage in Nashik due to floods have affected supplies and contributed to the price rise.
At present, the wholesale price of onions in Bhubaneswar is reportedly around Rs 38–40 per kg. However, retailers are selling them for as much as Rs 50–60 per kg. Traders have also indicated that onion prices are unlikely to fall immediately.
The latest increase comes at a time when prices of several vegetables and essential grocery items have already risen, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
Supply Department Steps Up Checks
Amid the sharp rise in onion prices, the Odisha Supply Department has intensified monitoring of onion stocks. A departmental team inspected the onion stock at the Aiginia depot in Bhubaneswar.
The inspection was conducted under the leadership of Additional Supply Officer Himanshu Dutta. Officials checked the quantity of onions stored at the depot and verified the stock records.
The department is also examining whether any artificial shortage or hoarding is contributing to the sudden rise in onion prices. Officials are keeping a close watch on stock levels and market conditions to prevent traders from taking undue advantage of the situation.
With onion prices already touching Rs 60 per kg in the retail market, consumers are now hoping for improved supplies and a reduction in prices in the coming days.
