Political Deadlock Continues in Tamil Nadu
Suspense over government formation in Tamil Nadu continues as no single party has secured a clear majority in the Assembly elections. The battle for power has entered a dramatic phase, with continuous rounds of meetings and political negotiations taking place behind closed doors.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has emerged as the single largest party after winning 108 seats. However, the party still remains short of the majority mark required to form the government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Vijay Meets Governor Again
TVK chief Vijay once again visited Raj Bhavan and held discussions with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath regarding government formation.
Although Vijay met the Governor, he reportedly failed to submit proof of majority support, similar to the previous day. The Governor has instructed him to return only after securing the backing of at least 118 MLAs, the magic number required to form the government.
The Governor reportedly told Vijay that he could take oath as Chief Minister as soon as he presents support from 118 legislators.
Congress Support Not Enough
Despite receiving support from five Congress MLAs, Vijay still remains six seats short of the majority mark. Meanwhile, parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and several smaller regional groups are yet to clarify their stand.
On the previous day, Vijay had submitted letters claiming support from 112 MLAs. However, after seeking legal advice, the Governor asked him to return with full majority support before staking claim to form the government.
Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai stated that since TVK has emerged as the single largest party, it should get the first opportunity to form the government in the state.
What is a Hung Assembly?
A “hung assembly” occurs when no political party secures the required majority needed to independently form a government. Tamil Nadu is currently witnessing such a situation.
Though Vijay’s TVK has emerged as the dominant force in the election, it has failed to cross the majority mark of 118 seats. As a result, the Governor has asked the party to prove majority support before moving ahead with the swearing-in process.
Limited Options Before TVK
Option One: Build an Alliance
TVK’s immediate option is to gather support from smaller political parties and independents.
While Congress has already extended support, TVK still requires additional numbers. Reports suggest that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India, both of which won two seats each, have indicated willingness to support the party.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which also secured two seats, has reportedly signaled support for the upcoming government.
If all these parties extend formal support, TVK’s strength could rise to 119 seats — enough to cross the majority mark.
Option Two: Minority Government Attempt
Another possibility is that the Governor may invite TVK to form the government as the single largest party and ask it to prove majority on the Assembly floor later.
However, political observers believe this option may not be easy, as neither DMK nor AIADMK has shown any indication of supporting TVK so far.
Suspense Over Next Government Continues
With intense political negotiations underway and smaller parties yet to make their final decisions, uncertainty over the next government in Tamil Nadu continues.
All eyes are now on Vijay and whether his party can successfully gather enough support to reach the crucial majority figure and finally stake claim to power in the state.
