Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Expected in Several Northern Odisha Districts
The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across Odisha till May 17 due to the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, several districts in northern Odisha are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging between 40 to 50 kmph. Districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Kendrapara are expected to be affected by the weather activity.
Rainfall Likely Across Coastal and Southern Odisha
The weather department has also predicted rainfall in parts of north and coastal Odisha on May 14. Meanwhile, rain activity is expected to continue in some areas of northern and southern Odisha on May 15, 16 and 17.
Officials have advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning activity.
Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal Becomes More Marked
A low-pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure system. At present, it lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining south-central Bay of Bengal.
However, meteorologists have clarified that the system is unlikely to intensify into a depression.
Overnight Rain Brings Relief to Bhubaneswar Residents
Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed Bhubaneswar on Wednesday night, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat and humidity experienced over the past few days.
Several low-lying areas and roads in the capital city witnessed waterlogging after nearly half an hour of rainfall. Residents, who had been struggling with hot and humid weather conditions for the last three days, finally experienced relief due to the sudden change in weather.
Apart from Bhubaneswar, several other parts of Odisha also recorded heavy rainfall during the night.
Severe Storms Cause Massive Damage in Uttar Pradesh
While Odisha prepares for continued rainfall, severe storms and heavy rain created havoc in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Uttarakhand on Wednesday night.
According to reports, more than 70 people lost their lives due to thunderstorms, lightning strikes and storm-related incidents across Uttar Pradesh. Several others were injured, while widespread damage to houses, vehicles and infrastructure was reported.
Prayagraj Worst Affected as Storm Death Toll Rises
The worst impact was reported from Prayagraj, where at least 17 people reportedly died due to the storm. In Bhadohi district, 11 people lost their lives, while nine deaths, including five women, were reported from Fatehpur district.
In Kanpur’s Majra area, a young woman died in a lightning strike, and over 30 goats were also killed during the storm.
Strong winds uprooted trees in several districts, blocking roads and disrupting transportation services. Large trees reportedly fell on houses and vehicles, causing extensive damage.
Sudden Weather Change Witnessed in Delhi
The national capital also witnessed a sudden change in weather conditions, with thunderstorms, strong winds and hailstorms reported in several areas. The abrupt weather activity brought temporary relief from the heat but also caused disruptions in many places.
