Vice Presidential Polls on Horizon as Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns

11

The unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has triggered a fresh round of political activity in New Delhi. The Election Commission is preparing to announce the official schedule for the Vice Presidential election, with a formal notification expected shortly.

Political Turmoil Sparks Intense Speculation

Dhankhar’s decision to step down on the very first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament has added fuel to political speculations. With the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) yet to announce its nominee, the stage is set for what could be a heated and closely watched electoral contest.

The opposition, though cautious, is closely observing developments and is likely to respond once the NDA reveals its choice of candidate.

Opposition Waits to Strategize

Several opposition leaders have indicated that they are prepared to contest the election, but are waiting for the ruling alliance to show its cards. CPI(M) MP Ritabrata Banerjee remarked, “We are awaiting a decision by the ruling side. When they nominate their own guy, we will talk of our strategy then.”

Political observers believe the opposition may unite behind a common candidate, potentially making the race tighter than it was in the last election.

A Look Back: Dhankhar vs. Alva

In the 2022 Vice Presidential election, NDA nominee Jagdeep Dhankhar won decisively with 462 votes, defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alva, who managed only 141 votes. Despite this past margin, changing parliamentary equations and alliances have created new uncertainties.

NDA Holds Numerical Edge — For Now

The two houses of Parliament have a combined strength of 787 members, requiring a candidate to secure at least 394 votes to win. As of now, the NDA commands a comfortable majority with 422 members — 293 in Lok Sabha and 129 in Rajya Sabha — along with additional support from nominated members.

This puts the ruling alliance in a strong position, although internal unity and potential cross-voting cannot be ruled out in a high-stakes contest.

Election Commission Nears Final Schedule

The Election Commission is reportedly in the final stages of drafting the schedule for the Vice Presidential election. Once released, it is expected to intensify political activity both within and outside Parliament.

With the backdrop of recent parliamentary tensions and a shifting opposition landscape, the 2023 Vice Presidential election could mark a significant chapter in Indian political dynamics.
