Five Orangutan Cubs Rescued in Balasore May Be Repatriated to Indonesia
Five orangutan cubs rescued from a Balasore forest may soon return to Indonesia as diplomatic and legal efforts begin to establish their origin and facilitate safe repatriation.
International efforts are underway to repatriate five orangutan cubs rescued from a forest in Balasore district of Odisha to Indonesia. The Indonesian government has taken the matter seriously, with diplomatic and wildlife authorities working on the process of bringing the animals back safely.
The five cubs, estimated to be between one and one-and-a-half years old, are currently being kept at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, where they are receiving specialised care and medical attention. The animals were reportedly found in healthy condition at the time of their rescue.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the orangutans may have originated from Sumatra, Indonesia. Orangutans are naturally found in Indonesia and Malaysia and do not have a natural habitat in India. Their presence in Odisha has therefore raised serious concerns about possible international wildlife trafficking and an illegal animal trade network.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has reportedly stepped up efforts to facilitate their return. The Indonesian Embassy in India, CITES Indonesia, the Indonesian Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and other authorities are involved in discussions.
DNA testing and legal procedures will be important in confirming the animals’ origin. A detailed repatriation plan is expected to be finalised after the necessary investigations and formalities are completed.
The five cubs were rescued on September 8 from a forested area near the West Bengal border in the Jaleswar region of Balasore district. They were subsequently shifted to Nandankanan Zoological Park, where veterinary teams are providing them with specialised care.
The incident has also prompted authorities to investigate how the exotic animals reached Odisha and whether an international wildlife trafficking network was involved.
