Naveen Patnaik Delegates Party Coordination to Devi Prasad Mishra Amid Medical Leave

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik has announced a temporary delegation of responsibilities within the party as he prepares to travel to Mumbai for cervical arthritis treatment, beginning June 22, 2025. The move has sparked speculation of a shift in internal dynamics within the party following its electoral defeat in the 2024 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Devi Prasad Mishra Takes Over Party Coordination

In Patnaik’s absence, senior leader Devi Prasad Mishra, a former minister and ex-MLA from Baramba (Cuttack), has been tasked with coordinating party affairs. As senior vice-president (headquarters), Mishra will manage communication among different party wings, supported by the BJD’s Political Affairs Committee, which will oversee daily operations.

The decision has drawn attention due to Mishra’s previously reduced role in the Political Affairs Committee, fueling talk of internal reshuffling and a potential comeback for the veteran leader within the party structure.

Medical Visit to Mumbai Sparks Unusual Transparency

Patnaik, known for maintaining privacy around his personal matters, publicly disclosed his medical visit via a post on X (formerly Twitter). He stated that his treatment will be conducted at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, under the supervision of Dr. Ramakant Panda, and assured supporters of his return to serve the state “with the blessings of Lord Jagannath and good wishes of Odisha.”

The openness surrounding his health and travel plan marks a departure from Patnaik’s traditionally discreet style, leading to curiosity about the actual duration of his stay and possible implications for BJD’s future leadership.

Shifting Power Structure Post-Election Debacle

The BJD’s 2024 election defeat has left the party in a state of introspection. Several party leaders have openly blamed V.K. Pandian, Patnaik’s close aide and former IAS officer, for the party’s downfall. Pandian, along with former minister Pranab Prakash Das, has remained largely out of the spotlight since the defeat.

Political observers suggest that Mishra’s elevation signals a shift away from the Pandian-Das faction, potentially positioning him as the number two in the party hierarchy.

Signs of Reorganisation Within the BJD

Despite reported discontent over his limited role, Mishra remained active in party activities even after the elections. His new assignment is seen as a strategic move by Patnaik to bridge internal divisions, encourage senior leadership involvement, and revive party morale after the setback.

Political analysts consider this leadership delegation a historic moment in BJD’s internal structure, possibly laying the groundwork for a broader reorganisation to strengthen the party post-defeat.

As Naveen Patnaik temporarily steps back, all eyes are now on Devi Prasad Mishra and the evolving dynamics within the BJD’s top leadership.
