Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on High Alert; 28 Districts Under Weather Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Odisha districts of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj as a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Friday. The depression, which formed off the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, was spotted at 5:30 AM and is moving west-northwest at 13 kmph, likely to reach the West Bengal coast within 24 hours.
Heavy Rainfall Predicted, Alerts Issued Across the State
Alongside the red alert, the IMD has declared orange alerts—indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall—for 10 other districts: Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur. Meanwhile, yellow alerts have been issued in 18 districts, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
The IMD warns that sustained rainfall may lead to flooding, waterlogging, and landslides, especially in low-lying areas. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph, prompting caution for residents and travelers.
Fishermen Barred from Sea as Coastal Conditions Turn Rough
Due to turbulent sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next five days. Authorities predict the weather system will begin to weaken after July 27, with rainfall intensity expected to reduce by July 29.
Kotpad Records Highest Rainfall; 20 Other Areas See Heavy Downpour
According to IMD Regional Director Manorama Mohanty, torrential rainfall and strong winds are expected to continue in several parts of Odisha. Kotpad in Koraput recorded the state’s highest rainfall in the past 24 hours at 129 mm, while 20 other locations have also received heavy showers.
State Authorities Brace for Flood Management
The Odisha government has alerted district administrations to prepare for potential flood scenarios. Measures are being taken to shift people from vulnerable areas to safer grounds, particularly in districts with red and orange alerts. The IMD Bhubaneswar centre also warned of worsening squally winds, urging residents in low-lying areas to stay vigilant.
As heavy rain continues to lash multiple regions, authorities remain on high alert to prevent any major damage or loss of life. Odisha’s preparedness in the coming days will be crucial in mitigating the impact of this monsoon disturbance.
