H-1B Hammer Blow: Shashi Tharoor Exposes Trump’s Political Ploy Against Indian Workers

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to raise H-1B visa fees to $100,000, accusing him of prioritising politics over problem-solving. India, which benefits the most from H-1B visas, is home to many tech professionals and young workers who rely on these opportunities. Tharoor described the move as protectionist policies disguised as patriotism.

“Domestic Politics Over Logic”

In an exclusive interview, Tharoor explained, “This has to do with only domestic politics. Advisors suggest the easiest way to favor American workers is by pricing out Indians, who often accept lower wages. By hiking fees to $100,000, even modest jobs become unfeasible. Where is the logic?”

Criticism of Tariffs and Trade Policies

Tharoor extended his criticism beyond visas, highlighting Trump’s reliance on tariffs as a “magic bullet” for US economic issues. “He believes tariffs can revive US manufacturing, reduce imports, and fill the fiscal deficit. Making foreign goods expensive supposedly protects American jobs and generates revenue, but it harms friendly countries like India,” Tharoor stated.

Impact on India-US Relations and Labour Market

The H-1B fee hike has strained bilateral relations and raised concerns among Indian companies planning expansions in the US. Tharoor called it “a betrayal and a blow to the country” but remained cautiously optimistic about future cooperation. He noted that recent diplomatic efforts, including visits by the US ambassador to India and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to Washington, signal progress toward a fair deal.

Balancing America First with Global Talent

Tharoor concluded that Trump’s ‘America First’ stance conflicts with the global competition for top talent, where the most skilled individuals can move across borders. Despite tensions, he expressed hope that mutual interests between the two nations will ultimately prevail.
