Fresh Low-Pressure Area Likely to Form Over Bay of Bengal, IMD Warns Odisha
IMD predicts formation of a low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal; heavy rainfall expected in coastal and southern Odisha.
ust as Odisha starts to feel the winter chill, the Bay of Bengal is showing signs of restlessness, with meteorologists forecasting the formation of a fresh low-pressure area in its waters. If it materialises, the system could bring rainfall across most parts of the state.
Cyclonic Circulation Over Strait of Malacca Influences Bay
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a cyclonic circulation currently over central parts of the Strait of Malacca, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, continues to persist. This system is expected to induce a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 22.
Depression Likely by November 24
The weather system is predicted to move west-northwest and could develop into a depression over the south-central Bay of Bengal by November 24, potentially strengthening further in the coming days.
Impact on Odisha: Heavy Rains Expected
While the system’s exact track is being closely monitored, its influence is already noticeable, with coastal and southern Odisha experiencing heavy rainfall for four consecutive days, which may continue even on November 25.
Precautionary Measures Underway
Authorities have issued warnings to fishermen against venturing into deep seas, and local officials are preparing for potential damage to standing crops and disruption to daily life. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, has urged residents to remain vigilant as forecasts are updated.
