No Sequel for 3 Idiots? Aamir and Madhavan Dash Fans’ Hopes with Candid Denials
Aamir Khan and R Madhavan dismiss sequel rumours, say no script or formal approach for 3 Idiots 2
Fans of Bollywood hoping for a reunion of the iconic trio from the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots will have to wait longer, as actors Aamir Khan and R Madhavan have dismissed ongoing rumours about a sequel to the much-loved film. Despite widespread speculation in media circles about a completed script for 3 Idiots 2, both actors have clarified that no formal approach has been made to them.
A Cult Classic That Redefined Hindi Cinema
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots marked a turning point in Hindi cinema with its sharp critique of the Indian education system. Told through the lives of engineering students Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (R Madhavan), and Raju (Sharman Joshi), the film struck a chord with audiences across generations. It went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of its time and remains a cultural landmark even years after its release.
Speculation Around a Completed Script
Recent reports suggested that a script for 3 Idiots 2 had already been developed, with Aamir Khan and director Rajkumar Hirani expected to collaborate once again. However, these claims were firmly denied by the actors. Madhavan acknowledged hearing the rumours but stated that neither he nor his co-stars had received any script or official proposal.
Madhavan Calls the Idea “Fantastic”
Reacting to the speculation, R Madhavan said the idea of a sequel sounded “fantastic” and praised the imagination of those who continue to envision new stories around the beloved characters. However, he emphasised that the discussions remain purely speculative and not rooted in any concrete planning.
Aamir Open to the Idea, but No Approach Yet
Aamir Khan echoed similar sentiments, stating that no one has approached him regarding a sequel. “No approach has been made. A sequel would be great fun,” the actor said. Recalling Rancho as one of his favourite characters, Aamir expressed surprise at the enduring popularity of the role, more than a decade after the film’s release.
Director Rajkumar Hirani Silent
While rumours have also linked director Rajkumar Hirani to the project, he has not made any public statement on the matter. His silence has only fuelled further speculation among fans and industry observers.
Aamir’s Recent Comeback
The clarification comes at a time when Aamir Khan has made a successful return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par (2025), which has received positive reviews. Although the actors’ statements may disappoint fans, they have also sparked curiosity about the possibility of a prequel or a fresh reimagining.
3 Idiots Remains Timeless
Even without a sequel, 3 Idiots continues to enjoy timeless popularity, with its themes, dialogues, and characters remaining deeply relevant in contemporary India.
