The skies over the United Arab Emirates plunged into chaos on Saturday after a swarm of drones launched by Iran targeted key locations including Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi. The attack forced authorities to shut down the country’s airspace, disrupting flights and triggering emergency responses across the region.

Witnesses in Dubai reported hearing loud explosions as air defense systems intercepted several drones. Debris from destroyed missiles reportedly fell across parts of the city, causing damage and widespread panic.

Drone Crash Near Airport Injures Staff

One of the drones reportedly crashed near Dubai International Airport, injuring four airport staff members and prompting the immediate evacuation of some terminals. Airport officials confirmed that parts of a concourse sustained visible damage, though they said the situation was quickly contained.

The airport, one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, experienced severe disruption as flights were forced to circle in the air or divert to alternative airports.

Flights Delayed as Airspace Closes

According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, multiple aircraft bound for Dubai were placed in holding patterns or rerouted after reports of a drone or missile strike near the airport.

“Flights bound for Dubai are holding after a reported drone/missile strike very close to the airport,” the platform reported, highlighting the scale of the disruption affecting international aviation routes.

Escalation in Ongoing US–Iran Conflict

The attack comes amid an escalating conflict between United States and Iran that entered its second week following strikes carried out by the US and Israel on February 28.

In retaliation, Iran has reportedly launched attacks targeting US-linked facilities and military bases across several Middle Eastern countries. The United Arab Emirates, a key US ally in the region, had already issued missile alerts to residents a day earlier.

Neighbouring Qatar previously reported intercepting a similar threat, but the latest strikes have intensified fears of a wider regional escalation.

Global Aviation and Security Concerns Rise

The disruption at Dubai International Airport — a major global aviation hub — has sent shockwaves through the international travel network. Thousands of passengers have been affected as airlines scramble to adjust routes and schedules.

Authorities have yet to release full details about casualties or the extent of damage. However, security analysts warn that the attack signals a dangerous expansion of the conflict, raising concerns that tensions in the Gulf region could continue to escalate in the coming days.
