Odisha to Shift from LPG to PNG in Urban Areas

Major Policy Push for Cleaner Fuel

The Odisha government has announced a significant transition from LPG cylinders to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in urban areas. The decision was revealed by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra after a high-level meeting held at Lok Seva Bhavan with oil company representatives and senior officials.

PNG to Be Mandatory in Cities

As per the new directive aligned with the Central Government’s policy, PNG connections will be made mandatory in urban areas. Consumers opting for PNG will no longer be eligible to use LPG cylinders. Oil companies have been instructed to complete the rollout in major cities within the next three months.

Relief for Rural Consumers

While urban households will transition to PNG, LPG services will continue as usual in rural areas. The government clarified that there will be no disruption in cylinder supply for villages, ensuring energy access remains uninterrupted outside cities.

Easy Access for Tenants

In a consumer-friendly move, even tenants living in urban areas will be able to avail PNG connections بسهولة. This step aims to widen accessibility and encourage faster adoption of piped gas systems across cities.

e-KYC Mandatory to Prevent Misuse

To curb black marketing and misuse of LPG connections, the government has made e-KYC mandatory for all LPG consumers. Once e-KYC is completed, no individual will be able to misuse or duplicate gas connections under another person’s name.

Rapid Expansion of PNG Network

Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra stated that efforts are underway to expand PNG infrastructure across all districts in a phased manner. Discussions with oil companies are ongoing to ensure timely implementation.

The foundation for Odisha’s gas pipeline network was laid under the Central Government’s ‘Purvodaya’ initiative and supported by former Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
