Cybercriminals Trap Rayagada Doctor in 12 Lakh Digital Fraud Nightmare
Rayagada ADPHO duped in high-pressure phone scam, loses ₹12 lakh
A high-profile cyber scam has rattled Odisha’s Rayagada district after Dr Mamata Choudhury, Additional District Public Health Officer, fell victim to a sophisticated “digital arrest” scam, losing over ₹12 lakh. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local medical community and highlighted the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals.
How the Scam Unfolded
According to reports, Dr Choudhury received a call from someone claiming to be from a courier service, alleging that a suspicious package linked to her Aadhaar card was under investigation.
The caller then transferred her to an individual impersonating a police officer, who threatened her with arrest and instructed her to stay at home for the so-called investigation. Under high-pressure intimidation, Dr Choudhury transferred more than ₹12 lakh over two days to the scammers. Authorities noted that the criminals used psychological tactics to instill fear and ensure compliance.
Rise of “Digital Arrest” Scams
“Digital arrest” scams, in which fraudsters impersonate law enforcement to extort money, are on the rise across India. These scams exploit fear and urgency, making victims comply before verifying the claims.
Police Investigation and Public Advisory
Rayagada police have launched an investigation, but the perpetrators remain unidentified, likely operating under fake identities and untraceable phone numbers.
Following the incident, local authorities have issued a warning to residents: verify any suspicious calls, never share personal or financial details, and report potential scams immediately.
A Growing Cyber Threat
With cybercrime cases escalating nationwide, experts say the incident serves as a wake-up call for vigilance and digital security. Citizens are urged to remain cautious, particularly when contacted by unknown callers claiming legal or government authority.
