Depression Intensifies: IMD Warns of Heavy Rains, Winds in Eastern States
IMD warns of a possible cyclone formation over the Bay of Bengal by October 27; Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu gear up for heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal impact.
disha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu on High Alert as System Strengthens
A brewing weather system over the Bay of Bengal has put coastal states on high alert, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting that the depression may transform into a cyclonic storm by October 27. The system, which began as a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay, developed into a depression early Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m., raising concerns about heavy rainfall and gusty winds in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.
IMD Predicts Intensification Over Next 24 Hours
According to IMD officials, the depression is expected to intensify into a deep depression within 24 hours before turning into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal. While the system’s path and landfall point remain uncertain, forecasts suggest it is likely moving toward Andhra Pradesh’s coast.
Weather expert Bishwajit Sahu said, “As a deep depression prevails over the Bay of Bengal, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Cuttack may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 29.” He added that moderate to heavy rain is expected across southern and coastal Odisha, while northern Odisha will see relatively lighter rainfall between October 27 and 28.
Rough Seas and Strong Winds Predicted
Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, warned that wind speeds could reach 60–70 kmph, with gusts touching 80 kmph likely to continue until October 30.
Due to rough sea conditions, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea, and all major ports in Odisha have hoisted local cautionary signal number 3 as a precautionary measure.
Odisha Government Steps Up Preparedness
The looming storm has prompted the Odisha government to activate emergency measures. The Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) office has begun coordinating with district administrations, while a flood warning has been issued to the Water Resources Department.
Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari reviewed the situation on Saturday, stating that decisions regarding school closures and revocation of employee leave would be taken based on the evolving forecast. He added that civil servants have been instructed to report to their offices without fail, ensuring full readiness across departments as the cyclone threat intensifies.
Coastal States Brace for Impact
With the system expected to strengthen further, both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are also on alert. Disaster management teams have been mobilized, and district authorities have initiated pre-cyclone preparedness plans.
As the Bay of Bengal continues to churn, all eyes are now on the IMD’s next update — one that will determine whether the developing depression evolves into yet another intense tropical cyclone threatening India’s eastern coast.
