E20 Petrol Sparks Debate, But Government Says Benefits Outweigh Concerns

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) is in agreement with the government, claiming that vehicles capable of E20 and with new components have existed since April 2023. Such cars are designed to accommodate higher ethanol blends without issues at all. SIAM stated that since enginetechnology and fuel system components have been improving, there are no ill consequences, and therefore it would be simple to switch to cleaner fuels.

Regarding the corrosion concerns, the ministry revealed that if your car is older and you run it for 20,000 to 30,000 kilometres, you might need to change some of the rubber components or gaskets since they have been long exposed to E20 fuel. They clarified that it is new cars that are designed to carry ethanol, and therefore you should not be afraid of having any major damage. The ministry also stated that new cars can run better and smoother with the use of E20 fuel, resulting in a cleaner and better ride.

This major thrust of the government on ethanol is a major project of its Green Fuel Policy, in which it wants India to use less imported crude oil since that is where many of our energy dollars are used. India hopes to ensure sufficient energy while simultaneously utilising sustainable fuel produced from crops like sugarcane and corn by increasing the use of ethanol in gasoline.
