ICC Rejects Bangladesh Cricket Board Request to Shift T20 World Cup Matches Against India

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has firmly rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to move the T20 World Cup fixtures against India in Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. The BCB had sought a change after expressing fears over the safety of Bangladeshi players amid rising tensions between the two nations.

BCB Raises Security Concerns

BCB President Aminul Islam confirmed that the request was made following two steering committee meetings. He stated that “prevailing circumstances” made it unsafe to send the national team to India, prompting the BCB to formally approach the ICC.

Islam emphasised that, being an ICC-organised event, all negotiations regarding fixture changes would remain with the international body, with no direct talks between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the BCB.

IPL Controversy Adds Fuel to Tensions

The standoff took another turn when Kolkata Knight Riders retained star pacer Mustafizur Rahman at an unprecedented ₹9.20 crore, allegedly under BCCI instructions. The move sparked outrage in Bangladesh against the backdrop of alleged atrocities against Hindus in the country.

In retaliation, Bangladesh banned IPL broadcasts, intensifying the diplomatic and sporting strain between the two countries.

The ICC’s rejection does not alter the tournament schedule in India but underscores the growing intersection of sports and geopolitics in South Asia.
