India Storms into Final with Thrilling 5-Wicket Win Over Australia
Jemimah’s Century and Harmanpreet’s Heroics Seal India’s Spot in the Final
In a thrilling semifinal clash at the DY Patil Stadium, India defeated seven-time champions Australia by five wickets to storm into the final of the Women’s World Cup. The victory, built on Jemimah Rodrigues’ brilliant century and captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s commanding half-century, marked one of India’s most memorable chases in recent history. India will now face South Africa in the much-awaited final.
Batting first after winning the toss, Australia posted an imposing total of 338 runs. Phoebe Litchfield led the charge with a majestic 119, while Ellyse Perry added a fluent 77 and Ashleigh Gardner contributed a quickfire 63. The Indian bowlers toiled hard, with Shreyacharani and Deepti Sharma picking up two wickets each to restrict Australia from crossing the 350-run mark.
Chasing a challenging target of 339, India began steadily but lost early wickets before Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the innings. Their remarkable 167-run partnership for the fourth wicket completely turned the match in India’s favor. Jemimah’s classy 127-run knock, filled with exquisite drives and confident strokeplay, anchored the chase, while Harmanpreet’s composed 89 provided the perfect support.
Even after Harmanpreet’s dismissal, India remained firmly in control. Amanjot Kaur joined Jemimah to ensure there were no late hiccups. The duo guided India to victory in 48.3 overs, finishing at 339 for 5. Amanjot remained unbeaten on 15, while Jemimah carried her bat, sealing the triumph in style.
For Australia, Kim Garth was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets, but the Indian batting brilliance proved too strong on the day.
With this emphatic win, India entered the final with renewed confidence and will face South Africa in what promises to be a high-voltage title clash this weekend.
