24/7 Operations Now a Reality

In a major move aimed at energising Odisha’s economy, the state government has introduced sweeping reforms to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and enhance employment opportunities. Under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956 and the Factories Act have been overhauled, allowing businesses to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round without special approvals for night shifts in setups with more than 20 employees.

Longer Workdays, More Flexibility

The daily working hours for larger establishments have been extended from nine to ten hours, now including a lunch break. These changes aim to streamline operations, making it easier for companies to manage continuous production and services.

A Boost for Small Businesses and Women Entrepreneurs

Chief Minister Majhi emphasised that the reforms will lighten the administrative load on small business owners, freeing resources previously tied up in compliance procedures. He said, “These changes will encourage new ventures, ensure proper overtime compensation, and create more opportunities for women in corporate roles.”

Driving Employment and Investment

With continuous operations and fewer red tape barriers, Odisha anticipates a significant rise in employment, particularly for women in the organised sector. The state is positioning itself as a business-friendly hub, attracting investment and ensuring a robust job market. By modernising regulations to align with economic growth, Odisha aims to benefit entrepreneurs, workers, and the wider economy alike.
