Odisha Strengthens Urban Fire Safety Measures, Statewide Mock Drill on Saturday
Odisha has stepped up efforts to strengthen urban fire safety with a high-level workshop and a planned statewide mock drill. The initiative focuses on preparedness, prevention, and public awareness to improve emergency response and prevent fire-related incidents.
In a significant move to enhance fire safety preparedness in urban areas, the Housing and Urban Development Department, in collaboration with Odisha Fire Services, organized a high-level virtual awareness workshop on Monday.
Focus on Urban Emergency Preparedness
The primary objective of the workshop was to improve coordination, technical preparedness, and response mechanisms to tackle fire-related emergencies in urban regions across the state.
Statewide Fire Safety Mock Drill Announced
Director General of Fire Services, Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi, announced that a statewide fire safety mock drill will be conducted this Saturday. He urged all urban local bodies to actively participate and ensure effective implementation of safety protocols.
Emphasis on Modern Equipment and Training
Dr. Sarangi highlighted the importance of adopting modern firefighting equipment, enhancing technical expertise, and strengthening institutional preparedness. He also appreciated the department for initiating such a large-scale inter-departmental awareness program.
Fire Safety as a Core Urban Governance Element
The workshop, held under the leadership of Additional Chief Secretary Usha Padhee, stressed that fire safety should not be viewed merely as a regulatory requirement but as an integral part of urban governance.
She directed all municipal bodies to incorporate fire safety measures into the Chief Minister’s Urban Development Scheme, ensuring long-term preparedness and resilience.
Participation from Urban Local Bodies
Commissioners of municipal corporations, executive officers of municipalities and NACs, along with fire service officials, participated in the virtual session, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts at all levels.

In light of recent fire incidents, discussions focused on three critical areas:
- Preparedness for emergency situations
- Prevention through strict safety compliance

Director of Municipal Administration Arindam Dakua emphasized the need for coordination among urban bodies. Authorities have been instructed to initiate immediate safety audits and awareness drives in their respective areas to prevent future mishaps.
The initiative marks a proactive step by the Odisha government toward making cities safer and better prepared to handle fire emergencies.
