Pregnancy Probes Spark Outrage: Tribal Girls’ Humiliating Welcome Back to Pune Dormitories
Tribal girls face humiliation as hostels allegedly force pregnancy tests for re-entry after holidays.
In a shocking violation of privacy and dignity, young tribal girls returning to government-sponsored hostels in Pune after festive holidays were allegedly forced to undergo mandatory pregnancy tests before being allowed entry. The directive—apparently issued by hostel wardens under the pretext of “precautionary measures”—has sparked widespread anger among students, parents, activists, and child rights groups.
Students Humiliated as Hostels Demand Negative Test Reports
Hostels under the Pediatric Tribal Development Department, which house students from remote tribal regions pursuing higher education, reportedly instructed unmarried girls—mostly in their late teens and early twenties—to purchase pregnancy test kits and present negative results.
The girls were then made to visit government hospitals, pay ₹150–₹200 in fees, and endure the wait for documented results.
“This is mortally invasive and soul-crushing. We returned excited to study, but we were treated like criminals,” one distressed student said, her voice trembling as she recalled the ordeal.
Parents Express Anguish; Practice Compared to Abuse in Ashram Schools
Parents from various districts, already burdened by financial hardship, expressed shock and helplessness over the humiliation inflicted on their daughters. One father from Nashik said,
“My daughter is broken. Why punish them with such emotional trauma just because your system is unhealthy?”
This incident echoes long-standing concerns about intrusive and discriminatory practices in ashram schools across Maharashtra, where allegations of similar “safeguarding measures” have been raised for years.
Department Denies Policy; Promises Action Against ‘Unauthorized’ Mandates
Amid growing public and media backlash, the Tribal Development Department distanced itself from the controversy.
A spokesperson stated, “Such mandates are unauthorized and completely inappropriate. No official policy allows pregnancy testing of hostel residents. Action will be taken against those responsible.”
The incident has resurfaced despite the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission cracking down on such practices in September 2025, calling the tests illegal and invasive.
Activists Slam Misogyny and Systemic Abuse
Women’s rights activists described the incident as a blatant example of patriarchal overreach masquerading as protection. Many argue that these practices undermine the very purpose of government hostels, which are meant to empower and uplift tribal girls, not subject them to moral policing.
Online petitions, social media campaigns, and community protests highlight the depth of distress and the courage of the girls who came forward.
Call for Accountability and Structural Reform
While the public spotlight remains on Pune, activists warn that many affected girls remain unseen, unheard, and unsupported.
They stress that the “real scandal” lies not only in this incident, but in the persistent social and institutional degradation that enables such abuse under the guise of safety.
Educational institutions and welfare bodies in Maharashtra now face mounting pressure to ensure accountability, psychological support for the victims, and long overdue systemic reform.
