Focus on Transparency and Heritage Management

The second phase of the inventory of the outer chamber of the Ratna Bhandar at the sacred Jagannath Temple is scheduled to be conducted between April 8 and 10. The exercise is part of the government’s broader initiative aimed at transparency and proper heritage management of the revered treasury of Lord Jagannath.

Government Assures Smooth Process

Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated that all necessary preparations are underway to ensure the inventory process is conducted smoothly. Authorities have emphasized that the audit will be carried out without disturbing the daily rituals (Niti-Kanti) of the deities or affecting the devotees visiting the temple for darshan.

“We have held detailed discussions to ensure that neither the Lord’s rituals nor the public’s spiritual experience is affected during these three days,” the Minister said.

Next Phase: Inner Chamber Inventory

Following the completion of the outer chamber audit, the administration is expected to begin the inventory of the inner chamber, known as the Bhitar Ratna Bhandar. Officials have expressed optimism that the entire valuation and documentation process will be completed within the planned timeframe.

Rath Yatra 2026: Early Planning to Tackle Crowds

Six-Month-Advance Preparations

In parallel, the state government has initiated early preparations for the world-famous Rath Yatra. In a departure from tradition, high-level meetings chaired by the Chief Secretary have begun nearly six months in advance to address logistical and crowd management challenges.

Decongestion of Grand Road

A major focus this year is the decongestion of the Grand Road (Badadanda) in Puri, which witnesses massive crowds during the festival. Authorities are implementing several measures to ensure smooth movement of devotees:

  • Road Widening: Expansion of connecting arterial roads to improve traffic flow
  • Traffic Management: Introduction of new protocols to prevent congestion during peak days
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Continuous monitoring to ensure civil works are completed ahead of the festival

Emphasis on Better Temple Governance

The proactive steps taken by the Law Ministry signal a shift toward more structured and efficient temple administration. The goal is to ensure that Puri remains well-organized and accessible during peak pilgrimage periods while enhancing the overall experience for devotees.
