Rohit Sharma Becomes World No. 1 ODI Batter, Surpasses Gill and Sachin
After a stellar series against Australia, the ‘Hitman’ turns ‘Fitman’ — reclaiming his top spot in ICC ODI rankings.
Former India captain Rohit Sharma has once again etched his name in cricketing history, becoming the world’s No. 1 ODI batter in the latest ICC rankings. The milestone comes on the heels of a dominant performance in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, where Rohit was named Player of the Series.
In doing so, Rohit surpassed teammate and India’s current ODI skipper Shubman Gill, as well as cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, to reclaim the top position with a rating of 781 points. This marks Rohit’s return to the No. 1 ranking for the first time since stepping down as India’s captain — a testament to his renewed focus and form.
From “Hitman” to “Fitman”
The 37-year-old opener, often criticised for fitness issues in recent years, silenced detractors with both his performance and physical transformation. Ahead of the Australia tour, Rohit reportedly shed 8 kilograms, improving his agility and consistency at the crease.
His performances spoke volumes — after a modest start with just 8 runs in the first match, he bounced back with a composed 73 in the second ODI and a stunning unbeaten 121 in the series decider, leading India to victory. His explosive yet calculated batting showcased a refined version of his trademark aggression.
Record-breaking Form
Rohit’s resurgence has not only elevated him above Gill (now ranked third with 745 points) but also ahead of Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran, who holds the second spot. Pakistan’s Babar Azam follows closely with 739 points, while Indian great Virat Kohli slipped to sixth place with a rating of 725.
Cricket pundits have lauded Rohit’s comeback, noting his adaptability and discipline despite age and leadership changes. His ability to maintain composure under pressure and evolve his technique has once again cemented his reputation as one of modern cricket’s finest openers.
As one fan aptly summed it up online — “The Hitman is back, and this time, he’s fitter, faster, and fiercer.”
