Sand Theft Scandal: BJD Calls for Sacking of Mines Minister Jena Over ED Revelations

BJD demands resignation of Odisha Steel & Mines Minister following ED raids over alleged illegal sand mining

Political tensions in Odisha intensified as the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) launched a strong attack on State Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, demanding his immediate resignation following revelations from Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids that allegedly link him to illegal sand mining.

ED Raids Reveal Alleged Illegal Mining Links

The controversy erupted after ED searches on January 16 at over 20 locations in Ganjam district uncovered ₹2.63 crore in cash, luxury vehicles, properties, and documents related to unauthorised extraction and sale of minor minerals, including sand.

BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty claimed that one of the raided premises belonged to Sunil Patra, who was officially appointed by Minister Jena to oversee mineral-related issues in the Gopalpur assembly constituency.

Evidence Directly Implicates Minister

Mohanty presented a letter in which Minister Jena recommended Patra to the Ganjam District Collector as evidence of a direct connection, linking Jena to the alleged illegal activities. “Since Sunil Patra was involved in illegal sand mining and acted as the minister’s representative, it directly implicates the minister,” Mohanty said, demanding that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi remove Jena to demonstrate transparency and accountability.

BJD Alleges BJP Support for Mineral Theft

The BJD also accused the ruling BJP government of supporting illegal mining, citing a drop in revenue from minor minerals to ₹1,485 crore in 2023-24 from ₹600 crore in 2024-25. They also noted the rising costs of sand and construction materials as a sign of mismanagement.

Minister Rejects Allegations

Minister Jena dismissed the accusations as “gibberish,” asserting that no illegal mining would occur under the BJP government. “Members of the trading in the mines may be friends of ministers, but I do not know who my friend is. I will continue to act against violators,” he said, denying any wrongdoing.

Governance and Corruption Debate Intensifies

The controversy has escalated discussions about governance and corruption in Odisha’s profitable mining sector. Opposition parties argue that the ED raids highlight systemic issues, while the ruling party defends its record and insists on action against violators.
