Government Tightens Safety Norms After Rising Accident Concerns

The Khordha district administration has implemented strict new regulations for boat and ferry operations in Chilika Lake, making safety measures mandatory for all passenger vessels. The decision comes in response to increasing risks during adverse weather conditions such as Kalbaisakhi storms and cyclonic disturbances.

Officials have enforced the Odisha Boat Rules, 2004, to ensure passenger safety during water travel.

Life Jackets and Safety Equipment Made Mandatory

Under the new rules, all passengers travelling in boats across Chilika Lake must be provided with life jackets, and every vessel must carry lifebuoys as compulsory safety equipment.

Boat operators have been directed to ensure that no passenger boards without proper safety gear. Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against violations.

Passenger Limit Strictly Enforced

The administration has also made it clear that the number of passengers on any boat must not exceed its permitted capacity. Overloading has been identified as a major risk factor in past accidents, and strict monitoring will now be carried out.

Boat owners have been instructed to strictly follow operational guidelines to prevent mishaps.

Safety Measures Ahead of Monsoon Season

Officials highlighted that the decision has been taken in view of increasing pre-monsoon weather activity, including thunderstorms and cyclonic conditions. With the approaching monsoon season, the risk of accidents in water bodies like Chilika is expected to rise further.

The administration has urged boat operators to adopt maximum caution during unpredictable weather conditions.

Strict Action for Rule Violations

In case of non-compliance, the government has warned that boat registrations may be cancelled, and legal action will be taken under the Odisha Boat Rules, 2004.

District authorities have communicated the directives to various boat associations, including operators at Kalijai and Balugaon regions, ensuring full awareness of the new safety protocols.

Recent Boat Accident Raises National Concern

The move also comes in the backdrop of a tragic boat accident in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, where a cruise mishap on the Bargi Dam resulted in multiple casualties. While nine bodies have been recovered and 28 people rescued, six individuals remain missing, highlighting the importance of strict maritime safety regulations.

Authorities have reiterated that the primary objective of the new rules is to ensure safe and secure travel for tourists and local passengers in Chilika Lake, one of Odisha’s most popular tourist destinations.

The administration has assured continuous monitoring to prevent any future water transport accidents.
