This spike comes after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged citizens to favor domestic digital platforms. The promotion gained further visibility when Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw echoed the call, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swadeshi vision and placing Arattai in the national spotlight.

Skepticism Over Long-Term Adoption

Despite the surge, experts remain cautious. Many users attracted by the hype may return to WhatsApp, given its extensive global ecosystem. Past trends in Indian tech adoption show that initial excitement does not always translate into sustained engagement.

Diversification Seen as Key to Retention

Venture capital analysts emphasize that diversification is critical for Arattai’s survival. According to Pratik Sinha, integrating features like UPI payments and ONDC commerce could help the app retain users beyond simple messaging. The idea is to make the platform an essential part of users’ daily digital lives rather than just another chat app.

Siddhart Pai, founding partner of 3one4 Capital, notes that foreign consumer technologies maintain an edge because of global adoption and network effects. Supporting this, Anand Lunia, Founding Partner at India Quotient, stresses the need for wide adoption and strong foundational tools, advising that a strong base can multiply user growth exponentially.
