In a major development for domestic cricket, Virat Kohli is set to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy after a gap of 15 years. Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley confirmed that the former India captain has committed to being available for the 50-over tournament beginning 24 December.

Kohli’s Big Domestic Comeback

Kohli, now an ODI-only player for India, last featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy back in 2010, when he played against Services. His unexpected return is being hailed as a massive boost for Delhi cricket, injecting both experience and star power into the squad.

The move aligns with the BCCI directive requiring centrally contracted players to participate in domestic tournaments to maintain match readiness ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Momentum After Strong International Form

The star batter recently smashed 135 runs against South Africa in Ranchi, displaying strong form in the ODI setup. His presence in the Delhi line-up is expected to raise team morale and fan interest, with the squad scheduled to open their campaign against Andhra Pradesh in Bengaluru.

Earlier this year, one of Kohli’s Ranji Trophy outings drew nearly 12,000 fans, underscoring his unmatched crowd-pulling ability. Similar scenes are expected during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Availability Still Uncertain Due to Upcoming ODI Series

Although Kohli has confirmed participation, the number of matches he will play remains unclear. India’s ODI series against New Zealand begins on 11 January, while Delhi’s group-stage matches conclude on 8 January. This overlap may limit Kohli’s availability in the latter stages.

Fans are especially hopeful of seeing him at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, his IPL home with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

A Boost for Delhi’s Young Squad

Kohli’s decision to return to domestic cricket is being viewed as a reaffirmation of his deep commitment to Indian cricket. His presence is expected to inspire Delhi’s young players while delivering an exciting spectacle for fans across the country.

The 37-year-old’s return marks a significant chapter in his illustrious career and promises to bring added attention to Indian domestic cricket.
