World Chhena Poda Day is being celebrated today to mark the birth anniversary of Sudarshan Sahu, the creator of the iconic Odia dessert, Chhena Poda. The day is observed not only in Nayagarh but across Odisha, various parts of India, and even internationally, reflecting the growing popularity of this traditional delicacy.
A Taste That Leaves a Lasting Impression
The mere mention of Nayagarh Chhena Poda brings delight to food lovers, as its unique taste has won countless hearts. Those who have tasted it once often remember its flavor forever. In Nayagarh town, long rows of shops dedicated to Chhena Poda highlight its immense demand. Every day, hundreds of quintals of this sweet are prepared and shipped to different parts of the state and beyond.
Integral to Celebrations and Traditions
Chhena Poda holds a special place in Odia culture, being a must-have during festivals, fairs, weddings, and religious functions. It is also believed to be a favorite of Lord Jagannath. In recent times, people have even started using Chhena Poda instead of cakes for celebrations. According to family members of Sudarshan Sahu, former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik was also very fond of this sweet.
Nayagarh’s Machhipada area, known as the birthplace of Chhena Poda, continues to produce large quantities daily for distribution across Odisha.
Empowering Women Through Self-Help Groups
Celebrations are being held today at the Sadbhavana Gruha in Nayagarh district. Many women from self-help groups have become financially independent by preparing and selling Chhena Poda. District Collector Madhumita Rath stated that several women have achieved financial success and are on their way to becoming even more economically empowered.
Grand Procession in Bhubaneswar
On the occasion of Chhena Poda Day, a grand procession was organized in Bhubaneswar from Ram Mandir Square to Lower PMG. The objective of the rally was to unite people and strengthen the demand for granting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Nayagarh Chhena Poda. Enthusiasts and supporters from Nayagarh actively participated in the procession.
A Symbol of Odia Identity
Nayagarh’s Chhena Poda has emerged as a symbol of Odia pride and cultural identity, earning recognition from rural areas to metropolitan cities like Delhi. To further promote and secure its unique status, April 11 is being widely observed as World Chhena Poda Day by various organizations within and outside Odisha.
