Pre-Monsoon Rain May Begin in Early June Across Coastal Odisha

After days of scorching heat and severe summer conditions, Odisha may finally witness some relief as the southwest monsoon continues to advance steadily. According to weather scientist Professor Surendranath Pashupalak, pre-monsoon rainfall is likely to begin in the state by the first week of June, especially in coastal districts, bringing down temperatures and changing weather conditions.

He said the southwest monsoon is expected to touch Odisha between June 10 and June 12, which could be on time or slightly earlier than normal.

Monsoon May Reach Kerala Coast Around May 26

As per the forecast, the monsoon may arrive over the Kerala coast by May 26. Meanwhile, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal around May 24 or 25.

The system is expected to move towards the Bangladesh or Myanmar coast and may create favourable conditions for further advancement of the monsoon towards northeast India. Its impact could gradually influence Odisha’s weather pattern as well.

Kalbaisakhi Rain Likely to Bring Temporary Relief

The current heatwave conditions are expected to continue across Odisha for the next few days. However, after May 26, Kalbaisakhi rain and thunderstorms may provide temporary relief in coastal Odisha.

Experts believe that western Odisha may continue to suffer from intense heat until the arrival of the monsoon, as the chances of significant relief remain low in those regions.

Another Low Pressure Likely in Early June

Meteorologists have also predicted the possibility of another low-pressure area or monsoon trough developing over the north Bay of Bengal around June 1 or 2. This system may create favourable conditions for pre-monsoon activity in Odisha.

As a result, coastal districts are likely to experience a drop in temperature and changing weather conditions. However, western Odisha may continue to remain under the grip of severe summer heat until the monsoon fully enters the region.

Heatwave Continues Across Odisha

At present, severe heatwave conditions and extreme temperatures have disrupted normal life across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for 12 districts during the next 24 hours.

Orange warning has been issued for:

  • Sambalpur
  • Jharsuguda
  • Nayagarh
  • Balangir

Yellow warning has been issued for:

  • Bhadrak
  • Jajpur
  • Kendrapara
  • Angul
  • Boudh
  • Sonepur
  • Bargarh
  • Sundargarh

Thunderstorm and Humid Weather Warning Issued

The weather department has also issued yellow warnings for hot and humid conditions in 24 districts. Additionally, 16 coastal and interior districts may experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph.

Warm night conditions are also likely in Sambalpur and Balangir districts, the IMD said.
