Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Odisha, Weather Department Confirms Early Spread Across State

Southwest Monsoon Arrives Early in Odisha

0

The southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Odisha, bringing widespread changes in weather conditions across the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has entered Odisha through the northern route instead of its usual southern path, surprising meteorologists and residents alike.

Monsoon Enters Through Northern Odisha

The IMD map indicates that the monsoon has already covered parts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapara, while lightly touching Jagatsinghpur. The system has also advanced into neighboring states including Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.

Officials say weather conditions remain highly favorable, and the monsoon is expected to expand further across Odisha within the next 2–3 days.

Rainfall Reported in Multiple Districts

Light to moderate rainfall has already been recorded in several districts including:

  • Bhadrak
  • Ganjam
  • Gajapati
  • Koraput
  • Malkangiri
  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Khordha
  • Nayagarh

Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to continue across the state over the weekend.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Alert Issued

The IMD has forecast widespread thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching 50–60 kmph in several districts, including:

  • Balasore
  • Bhadrak
  • Jajpur
  • Kendrapara
  • Cuttack
  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Keonjhar
  • Mayurbhanj
  • Nabarangpur
  • Rayagada
  • Koraput
  • Malkangiri
  • Gajapati

Southern Odisha districts such as Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati may experience heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Temperature Expected to Drop

Weather experts predict a 2–3°C drop in temperature over the next four days due to persistent rainfall and cloud cover. The current monsoon phase is expected to maintain intermittent rain rather than heavy continuous downpours.

Weather Activity Likely to Continue Till Mid-June

According to meteorologists, including expert Biswajit Sahu, Odisha will continue to experience scattered rainfall until around June 15–16, after which rainfall intensity may slightly reduce.

He also noted that the monsoon could further advance into additional parts of the state within the next 24 hours.

Severe Thunderstorm Damage Reported Earlier

Before the monsoon’s official arrival, Odisha witnessed intense Kalbaisakhi (pre-monsoon thunderstorms) activity.

In Dhenkanal’s Parjang area, strong winds caused significant damage:

  • Large trees were uprooted
  • Houses were damaged after trees fell on structures
  • Roads were blocked due to fallen trees

Similar storm impacts were also reported in Rayagada and Koraput, where:

  • Trees blocked roads
  • Roofs of several houses were blown away

Conclusion

With the arrival of the southwest monsoon, Odisha is set for a period of active weather conditions marked by rainfall, thunderstorms, and a gradual drop in temperature. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the monsoon system strengthens across the region.
