Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar Found Dead at Police Headquarters; Investigation Underway
Senior IPS officer was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious in his office; authorities probing the circumstances of his death
Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, sending shockwaves through the state’s police force and administrative establishment. Officials said he was found inside his office chamber and was immediately taken to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Preliminary reports have suggested that the death may be a case of suicide. However, authorities have not officially confirmed the exact cause of death, and an investigation, along with a post-mortem examination, is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following the incident, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, and several senior government and police officials rushed to the hospital. The sudden demise of the state’s top police officer has left the police fraternity and government officials in deep shock.
Anurag Dhankar was a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre. He assumed charge as the Director General of Police in May 2025 after serving as DGP (Intelligence) with additional responsibility for Law and Order.
During his nearly three-decade-long career, Dhankar held several key assignments with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. He was widely regarded as an experienced police officer with extensive expertise in intelligence and criminal investigations.
Police officials are continuing their investigation into the incident, and further details are expected after the post-mortem report and forensic examination are completed.
