Indian Railways Introduces New Tatkal Ticket Booking Rule from August 1
From August 1, Indian Railways will issue Tatkal booking tokens and begin counter ticket reservations simultaneously, eliminating the need for passengers to stand in separate queues.
In a major relief for railway passengers, Indian Railways is set to introduce a new rule for Tatkal ticket booking at reservation counters from August 1, 2026, simplifying the booking process and reducing long queues at railway stations.
Under the existing system, passengers booking Tatkal tickets at railway reservation counters are required to visit the station twice—first to obtain a token and later to book the ticket. The separate timings for token distribution and ticket booking often force passengers to stand in long queues early in the morning, causing inconvenience and overcrowding at reservation counters.
To address this issue, Indian Railways has decided to synchronize the timing of token distribution and Tatkal ticket booking.
What Will Change?
From August 1, the timing for issuing tokens and the commencement of Tatkal ticket booking at reservation counters will be the same. This means passengers will no longer have to arrive hours in advance solely to collect a token before returning later to purchase their tickets.
Benefits for Passengers
The revised system is expected to make the Tatkal booking process faster and more convenient. With token distribution and ticket booking taking place simultaneously:
- Passengers will not have to stand in separate queues twice.
- Unnecessary crowding at reservation counters is expected to reduce.
- Waiting time at railway stations will be minimized.
- The overall booking process will become smoother and more passenger-friendly.
Railway officials believe the move will improve crowd management at reservation centres while offering greater convenience to passengers seeking last-minute travel reservations.
Passengers planning to book Tatkal tickets from railway reservation counters on or after August 1 are advised to check the revised booking timings before visiting the station.
It is important to note that the new rule applies only to Tatkal ticket bookings at physical railway reservation counters. There is no change in the online booking process through the IRCTC website or mobile app, and passengers using digital platforms can continue to book Tatkal tickets as per the existing procedure.
The new initiative is expected to benefit thousands of daily railway passengers by making the counter-based Tatkal reservation process more efficient and hassle-free.
