Delhi Opens 25 New Atal Canteens, Total Reaches 100

On the death anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Delhi government on Sunday inaugurated 25 new Atal Canteens, taking the total number of such subsidised food outlets in the national capital to 100.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the new canteens in the presence of former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and Delhi Minister Ashish Sood were also present at the event.

The Atal Canteen scheme was launched by the Delhi government last year. The initiative aims to provide nutritious meals to economically weaker sections at an affordable price. A full meal, including rice, roti, vegetables and other accompaniments, is available for just Rs 5, while the government provides a subsidy of Rs 25.

The newly inaugurated canteens are located across several areas, including Tikri Khurd, Holambi Khurd, Timarpur, Mukherjee Nagar, University Metro Station, Azadpur Mandi and Rohini.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said reaching the target of 100 canteens was a significant achievement and a fulfilment of the government’s commitment. She said the canteens are serving people in slums, clusters and near hospitals, while students can also benefit from the facility.

Gupta also paid tribute to Vajpayee, recalling his contribution to public life and national development.

Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said the dream of a developed India could be achieved only when the poor also progress. He said the Atal Canteen initiative reflects the government’s focus on affordable food and inclusive development.
