PM Modi Conferred Uzbekistan’s Highest Honour as India-Uzbekistan Ties Get Strategic Push

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred Uzbekistan’s highest state honour, the Order of ‘Oliy Darajali Do’stlik’, by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his state visit to Tashkent. The award recognises Modi’s contribution to strengthening the strategic partnership and deepening friendship between India and Uzbekistan.

After receiving the honour, PM Modi dedicated it to the enduring friendship between the two countries and the people of India and Uzbekistan. The award comes as the two nations mark the 15th anniversary of their strategic partnership.

High-Level Talks on Trade, Defence and Energy

Before the award ceremony, Modi and Mirziyoyev held delegation-level discussions covering key areas including trade, investment, defence, energy and digital connectivity. The two sides also agreed to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

A major announcement was the decision to establish a long-term framework for uranium supplies from Uzbekistan to India. The two countries also discussed strengthening economic cooperation and identifying projects across important sectors.

Modi also highlighted cooperation between cities and states, saying the two countries were formalising three sister-city and sister-state arrangements. He referred to New Tashkent and India’s GIFT City in Gujarat, and invited Uzbek representatives to study India’s experience and technology in developing the financial hub.

Growing People-to-People Ties

President Mirziyoyev described India as a trusted strategic partner and highlighted the growing economic and cultural links between the two nations. The leaders also discussed expanding people-to-people contacts, tourism and business exchanges.

Yoga has emerged as another important area of cultural cooperation. During his visit, PM Modi attended a special yoga session in Tashkent, reflecting the growing popularity of yoga in Uzbekistan.

The latest developments mark a significant step in strengthening India’s engagement with Uzbekistan across strategic, economic, energy and cultural sectors.
