Odisha Lok Bhavan Becomes India’s First IGBC Platinum-Certified Green Campus

Odisha Lok Bhavan in Bhubaneswar has become the country’s first Lok Bhavan to receive the prestigious Platinum certification under the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Campus Rating System.

Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati received the certificate from IGBC National Chairman C. Shekhar Reddy at a programme held at the New Abhishek Hall of Lok Bhavan on Tuesday. The campus secured 88 marks out of 100, placing it in the highest category of the IGBC rating system.

Calling the recognition a matter of pride for Odisha, the Governor said the achievement was the result of collective efforts to transform Lok Bhavan into an environmentally sustainable campus. The certification recognises initiatives related to greenery, clean energy generation and use, and the promotion of electric vehicles.

Lok Bhavan currently has a 635 kWp solar power system installed on its premises. The Governor also said the Raj Bhavan has adopted a fully electric vehicle fleet for the Governor’s carcade, making it the first Lok Bhavan in the country to achieve this transition.

Plans are also underway to install small windmills within the campus to further increase the use of renewable energy. The Lok Bhavan in Puri is also set to take steps towards green certification, with a proposal for a 100 kW solar power plant.

The Governor urged universities across Odisha to pursue green certification and promote environmental awareness among students.

Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said the achievement would inspire government departments to incorporate sustainable and green measures while planning future public infrastructure projects.
