Odisha Government Announces ₹2 Lakh Assistance for Students in Accident Cases

The Odisha Government has announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for students who suffer death or permanent physical disability due to accidents while commuting to or from school, incidents within school premises, or food poisoning during mid-day meals.

The initiative has been announced by the School and Mass Education Department as a compassionate assistance measure for students and their families facing serious consequences following accidents.

The government has already been providing various facilities to students in government schools, including free admission, education, uniforms and mid-day meals. These initiatives have particularly benefited children from economically weaker and middle-income families, helping reduce the financial burden of education on parents.

Under the new assistance provision, financial support will be extended in cases where a student becomes completely physically disabled or dies due to an accident while travelling to or from school. The benefit will also cover serious incidents occurring inside school buildings and cases of death or complete physical disability caused by food poisoning during mid-day meals.

According to the School and Mass Education Department, accidents can sometimes result in loss of life, unexpected medical expenses and permanent physical disabilities. Such incidents not only disrupt a student’s education but can also place a severe financial and emotional burden on the family.

The government said the assistance is aimed at providing immediate financial relief to affected families during difficult circumstances. The ₹2 lakh support is expected to help families cope with medical and other expenses arising from such unfortunate incidents.

The move is being seen as an additional measure to strengthen the welfare and safety net for students studying in government schools across Odisha.
