Weather System Likely in Second Week of October

October has once again raised concerns among people living along the Odisha coast, with weather experts predicting the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal around October 12–13.

However, it is too early to determine the intensity or movement of the system. Experts said its possible development into a stronger system, including whether it could intensify into a depression or cyclone, will become clearer only after the low-pressure area actually forms.

Will Durga Puja Be Affected?

The possible weather system has raised concerns over the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any specific forecast about the formation of a low-pressure area at this stage, weather experts have indicated that the festival period could witness rainfall if the system develops and strengthens.

The exact track and impact on Odisha cannot be assessed yet, they said.

Rain Expected in Coastal Odisha

Meanwhile, the weather department has indicated the possibility of rainfall in coastal Odisha on October 6 and 7. Conditions are also reportedly becoming favourable for the gradual withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.

Experts noted that such low-pressure systems are common during the transition period as the monsoon begins to retreat.

Coastal Residents Remain Alert

The possibility of another weather system in October has revived memories of major cyclones that have affected coastal Odisha, including the Super Cyclone, Phailin, Fani and Hudhud.

At the same time, Odisha has been witnessing sharp weather fluctuations, with periods of rain followed by intense sunshine. Temperatures in some areas have remained around 4 degrees Celsius above normal, adding to concerns over the changing weather pattern.
