Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Odisha Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, successfully underwent a spine operation at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, June 22. The procedure was carried out to address chronic neck pain and stiffness caused by cervical spondylosis.

Surgery Led by Top Specialists
The two-hour-long operation was performed by renowned spine specialist Dr. Rajshekhar, with supervision from eminent cardiac surgeon Dr. Ramakanta Panda. The surgery took place at the Asian Heart Institute and was closely monitored to ensure the best possible outcome.

Speaking to ANI, Dr. Panda confirmed, “The surgery was successful. Mr. Patnaik is conscious, stable, and able to speak.”

Recovery and Observation
The 78-year-old leader will remain under observation for the next two days, followed by a five to six-day physiotherapy regimen before his discharge. His brother Prem Patnaik and sister-in-law were present at the hospital during the procedure.

Prior Announcement and Delegation of Party Responsibilities
On June 18, Patnaik had informed the public via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he would undergo surgery for cervical arthritis on June 22, following medical advice. In his message, he expressed optimism, saying, “With the lord’s blessings, I hope to return to Odisha soon.”

During his recovery, Patnaik has delegated the party’s responsibilities to the BJD’s Political Affairs Committee. Senior Vice President Debi Prasad Mishra is coordinating ongoing party activities to ensure seamless functioning in Patnaik’s absence.

Statewide Support and Prayers
Following the announcement of his surgery, there was an outpouring of support and prayers from BJD workers and well-wishers across Odisha. Many organized special prayer meetings and offered rituals for the speedy recovery of their leader.
