T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka Assures Tight Security for High-Profile India–Pakistan Clash
Special commando units to guard teams as Colombo prepares for February 15 blockbuster
As uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup begins to fade, attention has now shifted to the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan match, one of the most watched fixtures in world cricket. Despite threats of a possible boycott from Pakistan, Sri Lankan authorities have emphasized that preparations for the match are moving ahead with maximum security and coordination.
Sri Lanka Prioritises Security Arrangements
Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Sunil Kumar Gamage stated that ensuring the smooth conduct of all World Cup matches remains a top priority, with special focus on the India–Pakistan encounter.
He announced that special commando units will be deployed to oversee security during the tournament. The level of protection for the teams will be comparable to the security provided to visiting heads of state.
According to the minister, players from both India and Pakistan will receive full protection from the moment they arrive at the airport until they depart after the match.
Sri Lanka to Host Key Tournament Matches
The upcoming T20 World Cup is being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Out of a total of 55 matches, 20 games will be played in Sri Lanka, including six Super 8 stage matches.
Pakistan is scheduled to play all its matches in Sri Lanka. Tournament arrangements also indicate that if Pakistan qualifies for the final, the title match will be held in Sri Lanka.
India–Pakistan Match Set for February 15
The highly anticipated India–Pakistan clash is scheduled to be held on February 15 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. The match is expected to draw massive global viewership and heightened security presence.
However, Pakistan has reportedly issued repeated warnings about boycotting the match in a show of support for Bangladesh. Despite this, Sri Lankan authorities remain firm that tournament plans will proceed as scheduled, with security agencies fully prepared to manage any situation.
Focus on Smooth Tournament Conduct
Sri Lankan officials have reiterated their commitment to delivering a safe and successful tournament. Coordination between sports authorities, security agencies, and international cricket bodies is ongoing to ensure that all matches — especially high-profile ones — are conducted without disruption.
With political tensions adding an extra layer of complexity, the spotlight remains firmly on Colombo as the cricketing world waits for one of the sport’s biggest rivalries to unfold on the global stage.
