Escalating Tech War: Russia Targets WhatsApp for Complete Blockade
Meta-owned messaging platform warns of service shutdown as Russia tightens control over foreign tech companies
WhatsApp has accused the Kremlin of attempting to completely block its messaging platform in Russia, escalating tensions between Moscow and US-based technology companies. The Meta-owned service warned that the move could disconnect nearly 10 lakh users from global communication networks.
Service Removed from Official Registry
A WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed that Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has removed the platform from its official online registry — a step that effectively shuts down the service in the country.
The company said it is “doing everything possible to keep users connected” amid the restrictions.
WhatsApp has already been facing limitations in Russia, particularly on its voice and video calling features. Similar restrictions were imposed on Telegram last year, with authorities claiming the platforms failed to share information related to fraud and terrorism investigations.
Rising Tensions with US Tech Firms
The latest development adds to growing friction between Russia and American technology companies, especially since the start of the war in Ukraine. Moscow has taken a series of actions against US-based firms, citing national security and regulatory concerns.
In December, Apple’s FaceTime and Snapchat were also banned for what officials described as security reasons. Analysts say these moves reflect a broader effort by the Russian government to tighten control over digital platforms operating within its borders.
Push for Domestic Alternatives
Some observers believe the government is encouraging citizens to shift to domestically developed applications such as MAX. Critics argue that such platforms could potentially increase state surveillance, though authorities maintain that the measures are focused on ensuring compliance with Russian laws.
Kremlin Signals Conditions for Reversal
Kremlin officials have indicated that the restrictions on WhatsApp could be lifted if Meta complies with local regulations and engages in dialogue with authorities.
“It’s a matter of following the law,” a Kremlin spokesperson stated, adding that failure to comply makes it difficult to reconsider the decision.
Digital Divide Deepens
As digital boundaries grow increasingly rigid, the dispute highlights the ongoing struggle between national security policies and global connectivity. For millions of Russian users, the uncertainty surrounding WhatsApp’s future raises concerns about access to international communication channels.
