End of Two-Decade Reign: Nitish To Steps Down as CM, Eyes Rajya Sabha Seat
Veteran Leader Steps Down After Two Decades in Power to Seek Rajya Sabha Role, Sparks Succession Buzz in Bihar
In a dramatic development that has sent shockwaves through Bihar’s political circles, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from his post on Thursday, announcing his decision to pursue his long-cherished ambition of entering the Rajya Sabha.
The veteran leader, who has dominated Bihar politics for over two decades, made the announcement through an emotional social media post, sparking intense speculation and political activity across the state.
Emotional Farewell to the People of Bihar
In his message, Kumar expressed deep gratitude to the people of Bihar for their unwavering trust and support throughout his tenure.
“For more than two decades you have consistently maintained your trust and support with me, and on that basis we have served Bihar and all of you with full dedication,” he wrote.
“It was the strength of your trust and support that Bihar is now presenting a new dimension of development and respect.”
Soon after the announcement, crowds gathered outside the Chief Minister’s residence in Patna, raising slogans in his support. Police were deployed to manage the swelling numbers, with minor scuffles reported during crowd control efforts.
Rajya Sabha Ambition Takes Centre Stage
The 74-year-old leader of the Janata Dal (United) said serving in multiple legislative forums has been a long-standing aspiration.
“Since starting parliamentary life, it has been my desire to be a member of both houses of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Council as well as both houses of Parliament,” Kumar stated.
“In this sequence, I want to become a Rajya Sabha member in the elections happening this time.”
His move is being viewed as a calculated shift toward national politics, with the Rajya Sabha providing him a renewed role at the parliamentary level.
Promise of Stability and Continuity
Kumar assured citizens that governance in Bihar would continue seamlessly despite his resignation. He pledged full cooperation and guidance to whoever assumes the Chief Minister’s office next, emphasizing stability and administrative continuity.
Political analysts note that his tenure has been marked by strategic alliances and governance reforms that significantly shaped Bihar’s political and developmental landscape.
Speculation Over Next Leadership
With the resignation confirmed, attention has now turned to the question of succession. Political circles in Patna are abuzz with speculation, with some suggesting that his son, Nishant Kumar, could emerge as a possible successor. However, there has been no official confirmation from the party or the family.
A Defining Moment in Bihar’s Political History
Nitish Kumar’s resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in Bihar’s political history. His leadership, spanning over two decades, has left a lasting imprint on the state’s governance and political trajectory.
As elections approach, Bihar now stands at a crossroads, awaiting clarity on its next leader and the direction its politics will take in the coming months.
