Centre Mandates Free Seat Selection, Stronger Passenger Rights for Air Travellers

In a major relief for air passengers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation India has introduced new guidelines mandating airlines to offer at least 60% of seats free for selection on every flight, without any additional charges.

Under the new rules, airlines will now have to allow passengers to choose seats for free on a significant portion of the aircraft. This move is aimed at reducing extra charges levied by airlines and improving passenger convenience.

The ministry has directed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to ensure compliance with the new policy.

To address frequent complaints from travellers, airlines have been instructed to make efforts to seat passengers traveling under the same PNR together.

The DGCA has emphasized strict enforcement of passenger rights in cases of:

• Flight delays

• Cancellations

• Denied boarding

Airlines must clearly inform passengers about their rights through websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and airport counters.

Clear Policies for Baggage and Special Items

Airlines are now required to establish transparent and easy-to-understand policies regarding:

• Transport of sports equipment

• Carriage of musical instruments

• Rules for travelling with pets

These policies must align with safety and operational standards while remaining passenger-friendly.

Information to Be Available in Regional Languages

In a passenger-friendly move, the government has directed airlines to provide information on passenger rights and policies in regional languages, ensuring better awareness among all sections of society.
