Political Row Erupts in Odisha Over Alleged Fuel and Gas Shortage
Odisha Fuel Row: Government Denies Shortage as Opposition Questions Rising LPG Queues and Demands Transparency
A political debate has intensified in Odisha over the availability of fuel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), with the ruling government and opposition trading sharp accusations over the situation on the ground. While the administration insists that supplies remain stable, the opposition claims that long queues at distribution centres point to a different reality.
“No Crisis, Only Propaganda,” Says Law Minister
Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan dismissed reports of a shortage, terming them as misinformation spread by political opponents. He asserted that there is no shortage of oil or gas in the state and urged citizens not to panic.
“There is no oil or gas crisis in the state. The opposition is merely engaging in a smear campaign,” Harichandan said. He added that while LPG booking times have slightly increased, the overall supply chain remains strong and reliable.
Global Comparison and Assurance to Citizens
Highlighting India’s position, the minister noted that the country is in a relatively better situation compared to many others facing similar challenges. He reiterated that the government is committed to ensuring that the common man does not face any hardship.
BJD Questions Ground Reality and Demands Clarity
Responding to the government’s claims, Debi Mishra, Vice President of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), raised concerns over the visible queues at LPG distribution points. He questioned how the situation aligns with the government’s claims of adequate stock.
“If LPG is sufficiently available, why are people forced to stand in long queues?” Mishra asked, calling for greater transparency from the authorities.
Call for Action and ‘Plan B’
Mishra urged the government to present a contingency plan to avoid any potential crisis and ensure uninterrupted supply. He also questioned whether price control measures on essential commodities were being effectively enforced.
Public Caught in the Middle
As political leaders continue to exchange statements, citizens across Odisha remain caught in the middle, hoping for clarity and quicker access to fuel and LPG services. The situation highlights the need for effective communication and efficient distribution to address public concerns.
