Summer Vacation Begins Amid Heatwave, Odisha Launches ‘Summer Learning’ Program
Odisha Declares Summer Vacation Amid Rising Heatwave
Schools Closed Due to Intense Heatwave
Amid the ongoing severe heatwave, the Odisha government has announced summer vacation for school students starting today. The decision has been taken to protect children from extreme weather conditions, as temperatures continue to soar across the state.
‘Summer Learning’ Initiative to Continue Education
To ensure that students do not fall behind in their studies, the School and Mass Education Department Odisha has launched a special ‘Summer Learning’ program.
Under this initiative, students from pre-primary to Class 8 can continue their education from home using digital platforms. The move has been widely appreciated by parents and educators.
WhatsApp-Based Learning for Students
As part of the program, schools have created WhatsApp groups for students and parents. Teachers are sharing assignment sheets, study materials, and audio-visual content links through these groups.
Students can access these materials easily by opening the links, allowing them to continue learning without attending physical classes. Teachers will also guide students daily on different subjects through these digital platforms.
Positive Response From Parents
Many parents have welcomed the initiative, saying it will help children use their time productively during the summer break instead of losing touch with academics.
The program aims to keep students engaged and maintain continuity in education despite school closures.
Network Issues Pose Major Challenge
However, the initiative faces challenges in remote and inaccessible areas where internet connectivity remains poor. In places like Gunupur, parents have expressed concern as children struggle to access online lessons.
Reports indicate that in some areas, people have to climb hills or move far from their homes to get mobile network signals, making it difficult for students to participate in digital learning.
Government Assures Support
Officials have acknowledged the connectivity issues but assured that efforts are being made to ensure that children’s education is not disrupted. The government is exploring ways to make learning accessible even in areas with weak network coverage.
The ‘Summer Learning’ initiative reflects an attempt to balance safety and education during extreme weather conditions, though its success will depend largely on improving digital access across rural regions.
