Forest Fires Rage Across Odisha Amid Severe Heatwave

Rising Temperatures Fuel Widespread Forest Fires

As the intense summer heat continues to grip Odisha, forest fires are spreading rapidly across multiple regions of the state. From northern to southern districts, vast stretches of forest land are being engulfed in flames, leading to massive environmental damage. Thousands of trees have already been reduced to ashes, while wildlife is facing severe threats to survival.

Major Fire Incidents Reported Across Districts

Significant fire outbreaks have been reported in areas such as the Jeypore forest division in Koraput, including the Sundiguda pine forest. The fires have created dense smoke, affecting nearby habitations. Similar incidents have been reported in Chitrakonda, Balangir, Kandhamal, and Nalabana regions. Despite early warning signals from fire points, forest officials are struggling to bring the situation under control.

Alarming Data on Forest Loss

Recent data highlights the growing scale of destruction:

• 2022: 8,414 hectares burned
• 2023: 9,550 hectares burned
• 2024: 4,067 hectares burned
• 2025: 4,609 hectares burned

Although officials claim a reduction in fire points—from 29,000 last year to 19,000 this year—the damage remains significant, especially in regions like Baliguda and Kalahandi.

Human Activities Add to the Crisis

Authorities have identified shifting cultivation practices, particularly in districts like Nabarangpur and Koraput, as a major contributor to forest fires. Locals often set fire to clear land, which quickly spreads due to dry conditions and high temperatures exceeding 40°C, making firefighting extremely difficult.

Efforts to Control the Fires

The Forest Department has implemented several measures, including the creation of over 20,000 fire lines to prevent the spread of flames. Officials are also using the OFMS (Odisha Forest Management System) app to detect and monitor fire incidents in real time. Despite awareness campaigns and significant expenditure, controlling the fires remains a challenge.

Warning Against Deliberate Fire Setting

The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) has issued strict warnings against intentional fire setting, stating that legal action will be taken against offenders. Authorities are urging citizens to cooperate and help protect the state’s vital forest resources.

A Growing Environmental Concern

With rising temperatures and recurring heatwaves, forest fires are becoming a persistent threat in Odisha. Experts warn that unless stronger preventive measures and community participation are ensured, the state’s rich forest cover could face long-term damage.
