Cyclonic Storm Approaches Andaman and Nicobar Islands, IMD Issues Safety Advisory
Residents, fishermen, and tourists urged to secure homes and avoid sea activities as heavy rains and strong winds are expected from October 21-25.
As the Andaman and Nicobar Islands continue to lure tourists with their pristine beaches and turquoise waters, a cyclonic storm brewing over the Bay of Bengal is raising alarms. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains and strong winds, urging residents, fishermen, and visitors to take precautionary measures starting tomorrow.
The IMD communiqué highlights that the cyclonic wind system is expected to intensify from October 21, with several areas in the Nicobar Islands likely to receive 7 to 11 cm of rainfall. The archipelago is forecasted to experience thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of 40-50 kmph on October 21, 22, and 23, with conditions not expected to improve until October 24-25. Additionally, the Andaman Sea will see rough waters, with winds gusting up to 55 kmph from October 22-23.
IMD Issues Alert and Safety Measures
An IMD official told PTI, “Very heavy rain is very likely at one or two places over the Nicobar Islands. Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, is expected over Andaman and Nicobar Islands in isolated places,” stressing the need for caution.
Port authorities have advised fishermen to avoid the Andaman Sea and coastal waters until October 24. Tourist activities, including water sports and coral reef excursions, are also restricted to ensure safety.
Authorities Prepare for Potential Impact
Local administration and disaster management teams are intensifying preparedness, aiming to prevent casualties and minimize damage to agriculture, trade, and the fragile island ecosystem. Residents have been urged to secure homes, adhere to safety advisories, and remain updated with official announcements as the storm approaches.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and the public is advised to follow official channels for real-time updates on the cyclone’s progress.
