Assam Flood Death Toll Reaches 95; Over 1.6 Lakh People Affected Across 14 Districts
Over 1.6 lakh people affected in 563 villages as rescue operations continue; IMD warns of more rain that could worsen the flood situation across the state.
Assam is once again battling severe monsoon floods, with the death toll from floods and rain-related incidents rising to 95. According to the latest official figures, more than 1.6 lakh people in 563 villages across 14 districts have been affected by the deluge, while rescue and relief operations continue on a war footing.
Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, with over 57,000 people affected, followed by Golaghat and Jorhat. In the last 24 hours alone, six people lost their lives, while one person has been reported missing from Udalguri. A person also died in Mayong in Morigaon district due to urban flooding.
Floodwaters have submerged nearly 16,951 hectares of agricultural land, leaving farmers worried about their upcoming crops. More than 35,000 livestock have also been affected. Authorities said around 8,500 people have been evacuated, while thousands are taking shelter in 45 relief camps. Relief materials, including rice, pulses, salt, and cattle feed, are being distributed through 59 relief distribution centres, benefiting more than 32,000 people.
The flood situation has worsened as several rivers continue to flow above the danger mark. The Dhansiri (South) River remains above the danger level at Numaligarh. Officials reported breaches in seven major embankments, including five in Biswanath and two in Darrang’s Mangaldai area, further aggravating the crisis. Infrastructure has also suffered, with a steel bridge in Charaideo and a pedestrian bridge in Tangla, Udalguri, sustaining damage.
The impact has extended to urban areas as well. Waterlogging has disrupted normal life in Guwahati, particularly in Satgaon, Hatigaon, Juripar, and Anil Nagar. Urban flooding has affected 734 people in Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Morigaon, and Jorhat. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have rescued 80 people using boats.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that continued rainfall could further worsen the flood situation in the coming days.
