BJD’s Defeat Due to Mimicking Naveen Without Him: Badri Patra’s Explosive Revelation
BJD senior leader Badri Narayan Patra links party’s 2024 election defeat to decline in Naveen Patnaik’s charisma, calls for unity and reinstatement of sidelined leaders
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is grappling with internal controversy following remarks by senior leader Badri Narayan Patra, who linked the party’s embarrassing defeat in the 2024 Odisha Assembly and Lok Sabha elections to a perceived decline in the charisma and influence of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Patra Criticises Leaders for Imitating Naveen Patnaik
In an interview with local media, Patra stated that the people of Odisha still longed for Patnaik’s leadership style and personal appeal, which had dominated the state for over 24 years. He criticised party leaders who attempted to emulate Patnaik’s methods, such as using helicopters for campaigning or addressing the public through pandals, while sidelining the legendary leader.
“People want Naveen Patnaik. Unless other leaders elevate themselves to his level or give him due respect, they make no real connection with the public,” Patra remarked.
Call for Unity and Restoration of Sidelined Leaders
Patra attributed the party’s current crisis to leaders who have weakened Patnaik’s influence internally. He urged the party to eliminate disruptive elements and reinstate sidelined leaders to restore unity and strength within the BJD. His comments come amid a period of political introspection, following the party’s loss of power after more than two decades of dominance in Odisha politics.
Party Responses Minimise the Feud
BJD MLA Ganeshwar Behera responded to Patra’s remarks by downplaying the significance of internal dissent, stating that disagreements are a common feature in all political parties and are addressed by the party’s discipline committees.
However, Patra’s repeated public statements suggest that fissures within the BJD are widening, highlighting the challenges the party faces in regaining its footing without the guiding presence of Naveen Patnaik at the helm.
Political Implications
The ongoing debate underscores the difficulty the BJD faces in maintaining cohesion and charisma among its leadership while navigating the aftermath of electoral losses. Analysts suggest that the party’s ability to resolve internal disputes may determine its political relevance in Odisha in the coming years.
